Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Sealcoating

1. What is Sealcoating?

Sealcoating is a protective layer applied over asphalt pavement to shield it from damage caused by weather, oil spills, and UV rays. By creating a barrier that resists the elements, sealcoating helps extend the pavement's lifespan.

2. How Long Does Sealcoating Take to Dry?

Sealcoating usually takes 24  hours to dry, depending on the weather conditions. During this drying period, avoiding traffic and rain on the newly sealed surface is important.

3. How Often Should Sealcoating Be Applied?

Sealcoat asphalt is generally recommended every 2 to 3 years, depending on the amount of traffic and exposure to harsh weather conditions. High-traffic areas or regions with extreme weather may require more frequent applications.

4. What Should Be Done Before Sealcoating?

Before sealcoating, the surface should be thoroughly cleaned, and any cracks or potholes should be repaired. Removing all debris, dirt, and oil stains is crucial to ensure proper adhesion of the sealcoating material.

5. Can Sealcoating Fix Cracks and Potholes?

Sealcoating is not a substitute for crack or pothole repairs. It is primarily a preventative measure. Cracks and potholes should be repaired before applying sealcoating to ensure a smooth, durable surface.

6.  What Happens If It Rains After Sealcoating?

Rain can wash away the seal coat if it has not had enough time to dry. If rain is expected within 24 hours of application, it’s best to delay the sealcoating to prevent potential damage.

7. What Should I Avoid After Sealcoating?

Avoid driving, walking, or placing heavy objects on the freshly sealed surface until it fully dries. Also, keep the area free from leaves, dirt, and other debris that might stick to the wet seal coat.
